The Trust is a non-profit making organisation responsible for woodland training and community woodland planting projects in the UK and Papua New Guinea. Public facilities at the new centre provide space for training in the art of woodland planting and management.
A 120 square metre single storey timber building with reused redundant timber foundry with new build additions. Environmentally sound construction and servicing was used throughout to build an autonomous Woodland Centre.
Design features include:
- Carbon negative construction methods using timber, hemp and lime
- Carbon neutral servicing including wood fired heating and solar water heating
- Shallow lime foundations
- No exporting of building waste
- High timber use, including re-use of a redundant building
- High insulation using lightweight materials with high thermal mass
- Airtight but breathable external envelope
- Rainwater collected for use in the building
- Reed beds for waste water purification
