This new building has been designed as a sustainable exemplar for the Department of Architecture.
Timber construction using Glulam main structure and softwood secondary structure reduces the embodied energy of the building. Concrete has been minimised by lightweight construction.
Products using high percentages of recycled materials have been specified for the insulation and internal finishes.
Thermal models were carried out to assess the performance in use. An innovative water-based cooling system using radiant panels in the ceiling achieves good levels of thermal comfort without using masonry as thermal mass, thus decreasing embodied energy and reliance on concrete.
